Escape tectonics in the Los Angeles metropolitan region and implications for seismic risk

Article Abstract:

The Los Angeles metropolitan region lies in a transitional zone of mainly strike-slip rigid-block tectonics, giving way to east-west-trending folding and contractional faulting. Thrust faults are believed to pose the greatest seismic hazard in Southern California, following geological studies, and represent most of the estimated 5-7 mm yr(super-1) of contraction throughout the greater Los Angeles metropolitan region. It is shown that a major component of seismic moment release and shortening in the area is accommodated by strike-slip and oblique-slip faults.

How to police fraud

Article Abstract:

The UK Royal College of Physicians is contemplating the creation of a central scientific fraud investigation board but attempts to impose sanctions would be hampered by the lack of employer status. The current system where employers are responsible for penalizing defrauding scientists is more effective with possibly a central body to compel institutions to investigate and act on fraud. The US system of a central body takes longer than the UK system and results in minimal penalities of a temporary ban from filing research grant applications.
