Estimating fat content of caribou from body condition scores

Article Abstract:

Research using 64 barren-ground caribou has found that body condition score and body mass are less reliable individually as a predicator of fatness in older calves and adults than a body reserve index, which is the product of body condition score and body mass. There was found to be a strong relation between fatness and both body condition score and body reserve index, which may be partly connected to the ease with which subcutaneous fat deposits can be palppated. It was possible to distinguish between thin and fat caribou with either body condition score or body reserve index.

Evaluation of a mark-resighting technique for woodland caribou in Newfoundland

Article Abstract:

The Petersen mark-resight technique for estimating the population size of woodland caribou in Newfoundland was evaluated. The degree of the technique's precision was dependent primarily on the number of marked animals resighted. Increasing the number of marked individuals did not reduce the width of confidence intervals unless the total number of animals resighted also was increased. The technique proved to be a cost-effective method for obtaining precise population estimates of woodland caribou and large mammals where sightability bias is low.
