Europe is warned of a 'neutron drought' ...

Article Abstract:

Physicists and other researchers who attended a workshop sponsored by the European Science Foundation and the European Neutron Scattering Assn. and held in Autrans, France warned that Europe may experience a 'neutron drought' if the demand for neutron scattering continues to increase. They say that an immediate shortfall can be avoided by improving existing major facilities and constructing a third-generation neutron source in the region in the early part of the 21st century.

Researchers warned: 'systems could crash on 1 January 2000'

Article Abstract:

Scientific researchers are increasingly concerned about anticipated date format problems at the turn of the millennium. They, like every other group of computer users, have been told of the potentially disastrous computer failures expected. Business computer systems running financial applications are of particular concern since they form the backbone of research establishment administration. However, some scientific professionals dismiss the issue as an exaggerated concern.

Life science facilities in crisis as Brussels switches off funding

Article Abstract:

The European Commission's decision not to fund the operational costs of several major European life-science research facilities out of the fifth five year Framework programme (FP5), will mean financial crisis for the facilities. The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) depends on the EU for nearly half its budget and other facilities affected are the European Mouse Mutant Archive and the Drosophila stock centres in Sweden and Hungary.
