Europe urged to set common science teaching standards

Article Abstract:

Member states of the European Union (EU) recommended the establishment of common standards for the allocation of funds, equipment and staff to science education in the EU. The EU states also urged promoting of scientific awareness through cooperation between teachers, education specialists, museums and industries in the Europe. Students should also be provided with practical exposure to experimental and investigative work by encouraging close relations between schools and the media.

UK shifts research support into 'strategic' initiatives

Article Abstract:

The UK government, announcing the science budget allocation for 1995-96, proposes an increased funding by 67 million pounds sterling for strategic science initiatives and for collaboration with industry. Funds for strategic initiatives will promote interaction with the industry and will enable strategic studies in math, physics, medicine and biology. This allocation forms 5% of the total budget of 1,281.7 million pounds sterling.

Prospects dim for agreement on new climate targets

Article Abstract:

Prospects appear low for attaining an international agreement on binding targets for long-term reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Participants of an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting in New York are expected to renew negotiations on binding reduction targets on a post-2000 protocol. Signatories of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change also may not establish climate targets in the near future.
