Evaluation of urinary indices of nutritional status for white-tailed deer: tests with winter browse diets

Article Abstract:

The glucuronic acid:creatinine (G:C) index has potential as an index of quality and composition of winter diets for white-tailed deer in northern regions. The significantly greater G:C ratio of deer fed the balsam fir diet provides a further indication that the G:C ratio has potential as an index of balsam fir use in winter diets. Urinalysis techniques offer new and significant opportunities for research into deer ecology and habitat management in winter.

Energy intake relationships for white-tailed deer on winter browse diets

Article Abstract:

Previous studies have shown that food intake among white-tailed deer is affected by digestibility. To test such a conclusion, eight fawns were fed with winter browse diets with varying digestible energy (DE). The results showed that the fawns fed with low DE-diets experienced faster rates of body mass decline. Consequently, wildlife managers should provide white-tailed deer with diets that have higher DE during the winter season.

Litterfall: an overlooked food source for wintering white-tailed deer

Article Abstract:

Evidence suggests that litterfall in mature forests may be an important winter food source for white-tailed deer. A new study of over-wintering deer in central Maine evaluates the potential of litterfall as a food source in unharvested and harvested forests. It is suggested that litterfall in unharvested stands is high because of its availability, and may be of greater nutritional quality and more palatable than more familiar browses, such as understory shrubs and trees.
