Evidence against a dedicated system for word learning in children

Article Abstract:

'Fast mapping' is the process of learning aspects of the meaning of a novel word through a limited number of incidental exposures and then retaining the knowledge for a prolonged period. Two experiments were conducted examining this process in children and adults. The results indicate that fast mapping is not restricted to language learning, contrary to the assumption that it is the result of a dedicated language mechanism. This suggest that the learning and remembrance of new words can be attributed to learning and memory abilities that are not exclusive to language acquisition.
