Evidence for Tibetan plateau uplift before 14 Myr ago from a new minimum age for east-west extension

Article Abstract:

Analysis of hydrothermal muscovite from the Thakkhola fault system in Tibet to understand the tectonic evolution in Tibet reveals an 40Ar/39Ar age of nearly 14 Myr for these hydrothermal mica. This age suggests that the east-west extension in at least some regions of the plateau should have begun 14 Myr ago and also suggests that the plateau reached its high mean elevation even before the Late Miocene epoch.

Constraints on flux rates and mantle dynamics beneath island arcs from Tonga-Kermadec lava geochemistry

Article Abstract:

An elemental and isotopic study of the intra-oceanic Tonga-Kermadec island arc is presented, exploring the subduction of oceanic plates into the mantle. The findings place new constraints on the flux rates for both sediment and fluid components from the subducted slab. The model shows that recycling of the sediment component is slow, while recycling of the fluid component is relatively fast.

Timing of Tibetan uplift constrained by analysis of volcanic rocks

Article Abstract:

A geochemical data on the past-mid-Miocene lavas from the Tibetan plateau shows that the lavas are formed in the lithospheric mantle. The uplift of the Tibetan plateau is thought to be the result of the convective thinning of the underlying lithospheric mantle. A climate independent means of dating the onset of uplift reveals that volcanism is coincident with the uplift.
