Removal of adult males from the rearing environment increases preference for same-sex partners in the zebra finch

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the developmental processes affecting the preferences of opposite-sex mating partners in zebra finches. It is shown that removing adult males from the breeding environment directs greater partner preference to same-sex birds.

Female zebra finches require early song exposure to prefer high-quality song as adults

Article Abstract:

Early exposure to adult song is necessary in the development of song preferences in a normal adult female zebra finch, Taeniopygia guttata. The analysis shows that a normally reared female's preference for songs with more notes and spectral complexity is learned during early exposure to adult males that produce such songs.

Experimental alteration of male song quality and output affects female mate choice and pair bond formation in zebra finches

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to test the hypothesis that altering male courtship voices affected female mate choice and the formation of long-term socially monogamous relationships. The result showed that while females use voice quality as basis for choosing males, other male qualities might override voice quality as a basis for female choice.
