Exploring life as we don't yet know it

Article Abstract:

Genetics research needs to adopt a longer-term perspective. Issues such as gene therapy, human biodiversity and their implications that once seemed to be long-range plans have become urgent matters of concern. The Unesco International Bioethics Committee, for instance, can look to the future by creating and examining scenarios where 'improvements' to the genome have become feasible. Such efforts will not only get the right individuals involved, but will also improve public understanding of issues and pave the way for future debates.

Molecular evidence from retroposons that whales form a clade within even-toed ungulates

Article Abstract:

An analysis of data collected from paleontological, molecular and morphological studies indicates that whales, hippopotamuses and ruminants constitute a monophyletic group. Paleontologists who analyze recent molecular data may opt to re-interpret many fossil records on the order Artiodactyla or even-toed ungulates including cows, camels and pigs, to align with the conclusions.

Awakening angels

Article Abstract:

Genetic research has yet to establish the physiological mechanism which activates the p53 gene. p53-dependent gene transcription causes apoptosis to prevent genetic modification in stressed mammalian cells. It is referred to as the guardian of the genome. Scientists have established hypothetical models to describe p53 activation. These are illustrated.
