Extinction and persistence of rare orchids in Veracruz, Mexico

Article Abstract:

A study of orchid extinction was conducted in Veracruz, Mexico, where records from naturalists date back as far as two centuries ago. Twenty-five species of orchid were selected for the study, of which one seems to be completely extinct, and nine may be locally extinct. Overcollection is a threat to three species, while habitat fragmentation endangers the rest. Effective population sizes in the hundreds were found for only three species.

Succession and disturbance in sandhills vegetation: constructing models for managing biological diversity

Article Abstract:

Topographic relief is a significant factor in implementing plant conservation policies in southwest Montana. Research shows that seral vegetation in low topographic relief regions may be restored via soil-baring processes such as fire or grazing, which will encourage vegetation to cover the ground. High topographic relief areas, however, are more responsive to fire rather than grazing.

Should we use pesticides to conserve rare plants?

Article Abstract:

The use of pesticide is suggested for conservation of endangered species. This must be accompanied by long-term monitoring of effects on target and nontarget insects and the host plant. Use of pesticide is considered as primary option.
