Female house crickets, Acheta domesticus, prefer the chirps of large males

Article Abstract:

A new study demonstrates that information about male phenotypic attributes can be passed by acoustic signals. The study of male house crickets, Acheta domesticus, shows that their chirps pass information about body size and that females prefer the chirps of large males, particularly those which transmit a large number of pulses per chirp.

Female preference for male courtship song and its role as a signal of immune function and condition

Article Abstract:

Many female insects make use of male courtship songs to identify their potential mates as well as to determine mate quality. The relation between courtship songs and male immune responses is analyzed to understand the female preferences during mate selection.

Is cricket courtship song condition dependent?

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the condition dependence of courtship song in the Texas trilling field cricket, Gryllus texensis. It is shown that song is unrelated to fat reserve, diet or residual mass and is not a reflection of male condition.
