Zoos, aquariums, and endangered species conservation

Article Abstract:

Zoos and aquariums play a critical role in the conservation of endangered species through their programs on public information services, scientific research, captive breeding, and fund raising. The goals of the zoos and aquariums in the US and Canada approved by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association are education, conservation, science, and recreation. Computer analyses are used to ensure self-sustaining, healthy captive populations of animals. Zoos provide a suitable environment for the animals and a learning basis for zoo visitors.

Understanding the human factor in endangered species recovery: an introduction to human social process

Article Abstract:

Biologists and endangered species recovery professionals need to integrate the human social process in their efforts to save endangered species. The cases of grizzly bears and Hawaiian monk seals in the Yellowstone region emphasize the significance of mapping, understanding and participating in the social process during species recovery. The social process approach requires active involvement of the public in the conservation of endangered species.
