Flexible mate choice: a male snake's preference for larger females is modified by the sizes of females encountered

Article Abstract:

Red-sided garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) males were found to adjust mate choice preferences involving body size based on temporal and spatial factors that impacted courtship opportunity costs. Data were drawn from both den males and males from surrounding woodland.

Courtship tactics in garter snakes: how do a male's morphology and behavior influence his mating success?

Article Abstract:

Twenty-one groups of snakes each comprising four males of varying body sizes plus a female were videotaped to understand how a male's morphology and behavior might influence his mating success. It was found that all males engaged in courtship, and mating occurred in all groups.

Pheromonal inhibition of male courtship behavior in the brown tree snake, Boiga irregularis: a mechanism for the rejection of potential mates

Article Abstract:

Pheromones play a key role in coordinating the events that lead up to copulation in snakes, as seen in studies with the brown tree snake. The inhibition of the reproductive behaviors is specific to female cloacal secretions (CS) inhibiting male courtship behavior.
