Flickers of consciousness

Article Abstract:

The research on a British patient in vegetative state, which has shown signs of awareness of the outside world, and an ability to perform mental tasks on request, marks a turning point in the investigation of these enigmatic medical conditions. The evaluation of vegetative states has always been difficult, simply because of the huge variability in the nature and severity of the brain injuries that underpin them.

'Vegetative' patient shows signs of conscious thought

Article Abstract:

Adrian Owens and his team using the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brain of a 23-year old women left in vegetative state after a car accident in July 2005 failed to detect more than reflect reactions to stimuli such a sound or pain. They have demonstrated that their patient could respond to verbal requests to picture herself either playing tennis or walking around her house.
