Florida panther habitat use: New approach to an old problem

Article Abstract:

Over 57000 radiolocations of 100 Florida panthers and 8 introduced Texas cougars collected from 1981 to 2003 are analyzed using a Euclidean distance-based analysis (EDA,) a technique that measures linear distances between telemetry locations and habitat types to determine nonrandom habitat use, to address the criticism of habitat analyses of panther. It is suggested that panthers selected a mosaic of habitats when establishing a home range and selected forests and avoided open wetlands within their home range.

Demographic characteristics of a reintroduced elk population in Kentucky

Article Abstract:

More than 700 reintroduced elk were studied between 1997 to 2001 in eastern Kentucky. Calving rates rose from 1998 to 92% between 1998 and 2000. This is attributed to an absence of competitors and preditors, and a high nutritional plane. Future studies will concentrate on establishment, recruitment and colonization of Kentucky-birthed calves.

Seasonal and circadian changes in the home ranges of reintroduced Persian fallow deer

Article Abstract:

Persian fallow deer ranges were found to expand during rutting season for both genders, while in winter males decreased their home ranges. Home ranges did not vary according to a circadian-based model, involving day-versus-night comparisons.
