Mate loss in winter affects reproduction of mallards

Article Abstract:

To date, there have been no studies on whether mate loss in winter affects reproduction of mallards. To investigate the theory, a new study simulates mate loss from natural or hunting mortality by removing mates of wild, captive female mallards during winter 1996-97 to ascertain whether subsequent pair formation and reproductive performance would be affected. Results show that winter mate loss can lower reproductive performance of yearling female mallards in some years.

Return rates and reproductive output of captive-reared female mallards

Article Abstract:

Captive-reared waterfowl have been suggested as a solution to population declines, but the practice has not led to long-term population enhancement. A new study in Manitoba evaluates the use of captive-reared mallard females to increase local breeding populations. The study shows released birds had poor prefledgling and premigratory survival rates and concludes that the technique will not increase local populations.
