Foreign contributors hold fate of two SSC detectors

Article Abstract:

Scientists and engineers planning the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) are seeking international contributions to the building of two large SSC detectors since the Energy Department has only half of the $500 million that each detector will cost. The Solenoidal Detector Collaboration and the Gamma-Electron-Muon detector are both important to the SSC's goal of determining the fundamental physical forces. However, without foreign funding the detectors may have to be cut back even to the point of cancelling one.

Terms of Scripps-Sandoz agreement may be more common than its critics believe

Article Abstract:

A plan by Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corp to spend $100 million for the Scripps Research Institute has been criticized by Bernadine Healy of the National Institute of Health. The latter is concerned that the company might monopolize federal research funds and might take over existing projects by Scripps researchers. These fears may be unfounded since the partnership will have a Joint Scientific Council composed of seven scientists who will decide the allocation of funds.

Clinton accepts court's ruling on Antarctica

Article Abstract:

The US Court of Appeals directed the National Science Foundation (NSF) to follow the requirements of the National Environmental Protection Act regarding the construction of an incinerator at a US base in McMurdo Station, Antarctica. The NSF says that adherence to these requirements will result in a great deal of spending on unproductive administration instead of science. However, Pres Bill Clinton has rejected pleas to contest the ruling.
