Forest Stewardship Council forest certification

Article Abstract:

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest certification is discussed as it applies to timber certification in tropical forests and biodiversity. FSC principles and criteria are to apply to tropical, temperate and boreal forests, to plantations and to partially replanted forests, and thus are a broad prescription for forests all over the world. Regions develop local specific standards for independent third-party FSC-accredited certifiers. Wildlife or bushmeat in the tropics are not specifically mentioned., but do address biodiversity and wildlife.

The joint effort of timber certification

Article Abstract:

Biologists should work closely with the Forest Stewardship Council, other certification groups, and the timber companies and should consider hunting and the wild meat trade as they seek to achieve sustainability and biodiversity. Consumers should be one focus of education programs. Logging and associated roads stimulate the wild meat trade.

Biologists and timber certification

Article Abstract:

More biologists should be involved in timber certification, but pessimism about tropical forestry in general or the contributions of certification efforts is not justified. Many good changes come from a desire for certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
