French science head faces cash crunch...

Article Abstract:

Elisabeth Dufourcq, the new French secretary of state for research, said, in her first press conference after assuming office, that cleaning the financial mess of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) is her first priority. CNRS has accumulated a massive debt of about FF1 billion (US$200 million). The debt has accumulated primarily due to non-payment of the promised money by the government and over staffing.

Innovation 'stifled' in France, says report

Article Abstract:

State policy in France has failed to boost science research since 1988, according to a report commissioned by the National Innovation Agency. Government policy and bureaucracy has discouraged growth in biotechnology and other industries. Innovation has been severely curbed by the restrictive environment, says life sciences expert Pierre Tambourin. France completes far less high-tech research than the US and Japan.
