French study sparks debate on informed consent laws

Article Abstract:

The French press attacked government-funded researchers for carrying out scientific work involving children without obtaining the informed consent of their parents as required by law. Michel Duyme, Christiane Capron, Michele Carlier and Pierre Roubertoux at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS)/University of Paris V Renee Descartes Laboratory of Genetics, Neurogenetics and Behavior sought to test whether artificial insemination influences cognitive ability. Some scientists defended the CNRS group and said that existing informed consent laws are too strict.

Prospective studies urged of health risks

Article Abstract:

A study report put forward by the French biomedical research agency INSERM argues that fundamental researchers should aid clinicians in predicting medical risks associated with therapeutics derived from humans or animals. Claiming that medical risks can be attributed to progress in fundamental research, the report suggests that fundamental research should focus more on the risks of new therapies. The report also suggests that researchers should be socially responsible and should provide their vast knowledge base on skills for clinical applications.
