From the nose to the brain

Article Abstract:

Olfactory receptor proteins are responsible for organizing the olfactory information passing through the nose to the olfactory bulb in the brain. A thousand different G-protein-coupled receptors recognize the different odorants. Axons of one receptor gene converge on a few small target regions or glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. The olfactory neurons differ in the expression of the different receptor proteins. Either the receptors select the targets themselves or developing axons interact with molecules in the olfactory bulb which help the axons select the targets.

Article Abstract:

A mutant fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster with a defect in the early phase of learning, identified as Volado (Vol), has been found to learn an olfactory-avoidance task only around half as well as wild-type flies. Vol mutants have normal olfactory acuity and normal responses to shock, and their learning deficit is therefore not an indirect result of impaired perception or movement. The cloning of Vol shows that it encodes an alpha-integrin subunit not previously known. Vol mutations are dominant, suggesting that learning is sensitive to levels of Vol.

A collaborative group of geneticists, genomicists, and neuroscientists report the first large-scale RNAi screen in neuroscience. More than 100 novel genes that have specific functions in the transmission of signals across the junction between neurons and muscle cells are identified.
