From tilings to coverings

Article Abstract:

Paul Steinhardt and colleagues have reported on new electron microscope data that supports a simple answer to the question why atoms form in complex patterns instead of in a regularly repeating periodic crystal. They demonstrate the existence of Gummelt's decagonal coverage in nature using the high-angle annular dark-field technique. The decorated decagon is named a 'quasi-unit cell'.

Quasicrystalline valence bands in decagonal AlNiCo

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the electronic bandstructure of quasicrystals. Experimentation on decagonal Al71.8Ni14.8Co13.4 in order to investigate the angle-resolved photoemissions is discussed.
