Fruit(less)flies provide a clue

Article Abstract:

Genetic experiments on Drosophila have identified a male-fertility gene, boule, clearly linked to the human gene, deleted-in-azoospermia (DAZ). The DAZ homologue, boule, is a spermatogenesis gene with a long evolutionary history and is located on an autosome. A copy of the boule seems to have moved onto the Y chromosome. Boule's suitability as a candidate gene for azoospermia factor is evident from the absence of mouse Y-linked copy in DAZ on cloning. The identification and mutation of boule is achieved through gene targeting the homologous mouse gene, Dazla.

Some are less equal than others

Article Abstract:

It has been established that boron suboxide crystals are rhombohedral, with an inter-edge angle of 63.1 degrees. These crystals arise as icosahedral twins, with 20 rhombohedral unit cells fitting together tightly at a common vertex with no dislocations at the interfaces. In the absence of dislocated grain boundaries, glide planes in this boron suboxide are locked, with the particles therefore being very hard. This indicates potential technical applications.
