Fusion reactor finds delay is price of global cooperation

Article Abstract:

The international agreements concerning the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor have been causing delays because of different negotiation styles and a lack of agreement between the four partners. The US, EC, Russian Federation and Japan are expected to sign the $1 billion agreement for the engineering design phase in late Jul 1992 but the original intention for one design center has been expanded to three. The final cost is estimated at $5.8 billion but that cost may inflate during the project and the earliest the reaction could be operational is 2005.

Afterslip no longer an afterthought

Article Abstract:

Scientists K. Heki et al. have developed a technique to accurately measure active crustal deformation during an earthquake. The Global Positioning System satellite constellation is capable of sub-centimeter position to measure fault slip at fault zones all over the world. A number of geological processes including slow-rupture earthquakes, silent earthquakes, aseismic creep and afterslip are thought to affect steady motion.

Shock delay

Article Abstract:

Research examining the effects and patterns of the geological transfer of post-seismic stress is presented. Particular attention is given to the importance of understanding the redistribution of seismic stress to assessment of seismic hazards.
