Genes for asymmetry easily overruled

Article Abstract:

It appears that the shell has a considerable degree of non-genetic control over the degree of asymmetry in Clibanarius vittatus, a common western Atlantic hermit crab. The initial right-side reduction in shell-less juveniles indicates that control over the direction of the asymmetry could be genetic. There seem to be minimal developmental constraints against the retention of symmetry in adults. This is indicated by the fact that many of the key features of the non-shell-using hermit crab genera can be induced in an asymmetrical species within just one ontogenetic cycle.

Genes blossom from a weed

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to analyze just under 1.9 Mb of contiguous DNA sequence produced by the European Union Arabidopsis Genome Project. Researchers found an average of one gene every 4,800 bases, and anticipate that the maximum number of genes required to 'grow' a plant would be around 21,000. This work gives a valuable insight into the largest contiguous segment of plant DNA sequenced so far.
