The proposed ethics principles for genetic screening, generated by the World Medical Assn, place the patient's privacy over all other considerations in the physician-patient relationship even if preventative steps could be taken. It disallows genetic testing for diseases or conditions that lack a cure or treatment regardless of the person's wishes, ignoring the advantage of foreknowledge to prepare for conditions such as Alzheimer's. Additionally, the proposal includes a disquieting statement of concern that genetic screening could be used to undermine natural selection.

A genetic basis for familial aggregation in multiple sclerosis

Article Abstract:

A study has found evidence that multiple sclerosis (MS) is a genetic-based disorder. A standardized questionnaires put to 15,000 individuals indicates that the number of cases of MS among first-degree non-biological relatives living with individuals having MS was nearly the same as the Canadian population the study participants were drawn from, and considerably less than that for biological relatives.
