Geodetic observations of very rapid convergence and back-arc extension at the Tonga arc

Article Abstract:

Geodetic observations of crustal motions in the Tonga Lau system, using the Global Postioning System, suggest that the intense magnetic seismicity in the region can be attributed to high subduction and back-arc extension rates. The opening rate of the Lau basin increases northward up to nearly 60 mm per year. The northern Tonga ridge contains part of a rigid microplate, as suggested by the absence of straining in the region. Convergence rates across the Tonga increases northward up to nearly 240 mm per year.

Continental rifting and initial sea-floor spreading in the Woodlark basin

Article Abstract:

A marine geophysical study of the continental rifting and sea-floor spreading in the western Woodlark basin near New Guinea verifies the models of rifting to spreading transition that incorporate ridge propagation and nucleation of discrete spreading cells. A spreading center is reoriented by concurrent jumping rather than propagation.

Metamorphic core complex formation by density inversion and lower-crust extrusion

Article Abstract:

The core complexes of the D'Entrecasteaux islands of Papua New Guinea accommodate extension through the vertical extrusion of ductile lower-crust material, created by a crustal density inversion. The mechanism of buoyant lower crustal extrusion may arise in other areas of extension and core complex formation.
