Global methylation in eutherian hybrids

Article Abstract:

A proposal by O'Neil et al that epigenetic processes help drive karyotypic evolution in marsupials disagree with the findings of a new study of three hybrids of placental mammals. The study of interspecific hybrids of Equidea (Perossodactyla), Muridae (Rodentia) and Camelidae (Artiodacytla) finds no evidence of changes in genome-wide methylation when compared with parental animals. It is suggested that the basic mechanisms of genome evolution may be different in marsupials and placental animals.

Demethylation of the zygotic paternal genome

Article Abstract:

Global methylation of paternal and maternal genomes in mouse pre-implantation embryos was analyzed using immunofluorescence against 5-methyl-cytosine (MeC). Paternal and maternal chromosomes stained equally intensely with anti-MeC antibody at three hours and six hours. This indicates the rapid de novo methylation of egg chromatin just after fertilization. Paternal pronnuclei were de-condensed and larger than the maternal pronuclei after eight hours.
