Global trends of whole-genome duplications revealed by the ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia

Article Abstract:

It is shown that in the unicellular eukaryote Paramecium tetraurelia, a ciliate, most of the genes arose through at least three successive whole-genome duplications. The phylogenetic analysis has indicated that many genes are maintained after whole-genome duplication not because of functional innovation but because of gene dosage constraints.

Translational control of intron splicing in eukaryotes

Article Abstract:

The article explains the translational control of intron splicing in eukaryotes that often lead to the premature termination of mRNA translation. The species with high intron numbers are found to be highly dependent on the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay pathway.
