Greek earthquake stirs controversy over claims for prediction method

Article Abstract:

VAN, a technique using changes in ground-based electrical activity to predict earthquakes, was developed by Panayotis Varotsos of Athens and has created a controversy regarding its validity, especially after the Jun 1995 earthquake in the southwestern part of Greece. Although Varotsos claims successful prediction by this technique, the scientific community denys the predictions, saying they were too early and of the wrong magnitude. Some seismologists claim the technique is vague and lacks both scientific and statistical vigour but others, including the Japanese, are exploring VAN.

Court charges open split in Greek earthquake experts

Article Abstract:

The director of The Greek earthquake planning and protection agency, Dimitris Papanikolaou, has been accused of inaction, despite two separate early warnings of the earthquake that killed 25 people in Jun 1995, by Athen's public prosecutor. These warnings were given to him by professor Panagyotis Varotsos and associate professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos. Varotsos had forecasted the earthquake by his controversial VAN method. Papanikolaou and the scientific community have expressed their shock over the allegations, for which Papanicolaou is ordered to testify again.

Biogeochemists and industry search for common interests

Article Abstract:

An international-level meeting focussed on the collaboration of biogeochemistry basic researchers with funding agencies and industry representatives in delineating the applications of microbiology, and solving environmental and industrial problems. The funding concepts of wealth creation and quality of life are a part of basic research. Industry has some expectations from basic researchers. The idea of setting priorities for funding basic research got support.
