Growth and differentiation in the Drosophila eye coordinated by hedgehog

Article Abstract:

Experimental studies on Drosophila eye indicate that progression of ectopic furrows in the anterior eye disc is initiated by ectopic expression of hedgehog gene. The furrow progression influences the cell shape, cell cycle synchronization, cell proliferation and pattern formation. The morphogenetic furrow and a transient boundary, coordinating growth and differentiation of the eye disc, are in close proximity. Propagation of the transient boundary across the epithelium requires the hedgehog gene.
