Gustatory habituation to deterrent allelochemicals in a herbivore: concentration and compound specificity
Article Abstract:
A study of stimulus specificity of gustatory habituation in polyphagous grasshoppers reveals that high levels of the same compound and critical levels of new deterrent compounds exert varied influences on grasshopper's responsiveness. Three sets of experiments were performed to analyze the gustatory behavior in response to allelochemicals. Habituation to hyoscyamine caused generalization to nicotine and lobeline but nicotine was unable to generalize novel alkaloid.
