Hans Keirstead: Faith, hope, and sober caution

Article Abstract:

Hans Keirstead, assistant professor at the Reeve-Irvine Research Center in Irvine, California, discusses his thesis on a method for regenerating damaged spinal cords by the removal of myelin. He feels that a real advantage for him is to be able to work with human tissue in basic research and those stem cells are becoming a universal tool.

Colwell calls time on 'wonderful run' at NSF

National Science Foundation (NSF) is the agency that supports most non-biomedical research in the United States. Rita Colwell, the first woman to run the NSF, stated that the NSF's budget grew by two-thirds in six-year period.

Climate researcher takes academy hot seat

The U.S. National Academy of Sciences has nominated Ralph Cicerone as its next president. Once elected, he will serve a six-year term from July 2005 and he will be the first climate change-scientist to become its president.
