Harvard faces questions on missing data

Article Abstract:

The Dept of Veterans' Affairs is conducting an inquiry on a possible scientific misconduct made by two physicians for failing to document key experiments that led to the publication of a study. The experiment, carried out by Arnaldo A. Arbini at a center affiliated to Harvard Medical School under the direction of Veterans' Affairs Medical Center's Kenneth A. Bauer, concerned a genetic defect that caused a Factor VII deficiency in an Italian patient. Although the research was published in the journal 'Blood,' both Arbini and Bauer failed to make laboratory notebook entries about the experiments. The issue relating to the absence of data notebooks as a scientific misconduct has varied over the years.

Berkeley dispute festers over biotech deal

Article Abstract:

The plant research contract with Novartis, a life sciences company, is continuing to cause controversy at the University of California at Berkeley (UCB). The mainstay of the college is research on plants and agricultural and ecological policy, and under the contract, the department of plant and microbial biology will receive $5 million a year for five years from Novartis, and in return Novartis will have first right to negotiate for licenses on a percentage of patentable discoveries. There are concerns about the potential impact of the contract on academic freedom.
