High brain densities of the immunophilin FKBP colocalized with calcineurin

Article Abstract:

Rat brains contain high levels of the immunophilin FK506 binding protein (FKBP), suggesting that the immunophilins and calcineurin, a Ca2+-dependent protein phosphatase, are associated physiologically. FKBP and another immunophilin, cyclophilin, are soluble proteins that bind the immunosuppresant drugs FK506 and cyclosporin A. Moreover, low levels of FK506 and cyclosporin may prevent phosphotase activity by reacting to immunophilin-calcineurin complexes, thus increasing the phosphorylation of endogenous protein substrates in brain tissue.

Behavioural abnormalities in male mice lacking neuronal nitric oxide synthase

Article Abstract:

Mice suffering from a deficiency of neuronal nitric oxide synthase have been observed to exhibit abnormal appearance, movement and breeding habits. They have also demonstrated the tendency to long-term depression. In a particular experiment, mice have shown such aggressive behavior as offensive attack, biting, wrestling and chasing. The effects of the injection of nitric oxide in such mice are hard to diagnose as the behavioral aspect cannot be easily distinguished from the physiological one.

Cloning and expression of an adenylyl cyclase localized to the corpus striatum

Article Abstract:

The gene for a new adenylyl cyclase that may be involved in the function of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain has been cloned. The function of dopamine is known to involve adenylyl cyclases, but those known previously are involved in many other systems, thus making their medical usefulness in dopamine-related systems doubtful. This new adenylyl cyclase is concentrated in the corpus striatum of the brain indicating that it may be involved in the synaptic effects of dopamine.
