Holland picks 'superleague' plan, despite criticisms

Article Abstract:

The Netherlands is set to pursue a reform program seeking to improve its research system. The country is currently in 10th place in the world ranking of national scientific output. The reform proposals include the creation of a 'superleague' of 10 university research schools which will receive half of the government's total budget for all Dutch research schools. Also planned are the establishment of a research system similar to the Max Planck Institutes in Germany, and the reorganization of the NWO, the Dutch counterpart of the US National Science Foundation.

IBM promises scientists 500-fold leap in superconducting power...

Article Abstract:

Computer scientists believe that IBM's planned $100 million pentaflop computer, nicknamed Blue Gene, represents the first significant development in computer architecture for many years. The firm will construct the programme around the challenge of modelling protein folding. However, the hardware will not be customized to this challenge. If the blueprint is successful, it will make pentaflop computers available to all scientific disciplines. Innovations include the use of a prototype technology that unites processor and memory on the same chip.
