Hollow nanoparticles of WS2 as potential solid-state lubricants

Article Abstract:

Research shows that synthesized hollow nanoparticles (HNs) of metal dichalcogenides MX2 can act as solid lubricants. Solid lubricants 2H-WS2 and 2H-MoS2 were outperformed by HN-WS2 in respect of lifetime, wear and friction in various test conditions. The hollow cage structure and chemical inertness of HN-WS2 contribute towards its excellent performance, with the particles able to roll instead of slide. Solid lubricants have applications in automotive transport and space technology.

Polyhedral and cylindrical structures of tungsten disulphide

Article Abstract:

Tungsten disulphide (WS2), a layered semiconductor compound, was induced to form closed polyhedral and cylindrical crystals that resemble the stable structures derived from the carbon system. Transmission electron microscopy verified the polyhedral and cylindrical shape of the WS2 crystals that developed from an initially formless, tungsten-containing mixture. The three-dimensional closure of these crystals implies the presence of structural imperfections.

Cage structures and nanotubes of NiCI(sub2)

Article Abstract:

Nanoparticles of the layered compound NiCI(sub2) which can form cage structures, have been studied. The hexagonal pattern of the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) suggests that the nanoparticle is hollow, and this is conformed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is the first group of halogen compounds with layered structure that is shown to form new nanostructures.
