Hopes rise for agreement on greenhouse gas targets

Article Abstract:

The need for binding targets for emissions of greenhouse gases has been expressed by a constantly growing number of attendees of the international climate convention in 1992 although little progress has been made to date. Environmental groups are becoming restless and are hoping that mandatory limits on the volume of gas emission be agreed upon soon. The Clinton administration, on the other hand, is currently under pressure from industrialists and Republican leaders in Congress. It has to make ways for a gradual transition so as not to hurt corporate America.

Rio follow-up faces frustrated ambitions

Article Abstract:

Delegates, attending a United Nations meeting on the fifth anniversary of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, heard that little progress has been made towards sustainable development in the intervening period. The 'Earth Summit+5' meeting was told that greenhouse gas emissions continue to grow, despite the undertaking by developing nations that they would reduce their emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2000. The meeting was dominated by international pressure on the US to set dates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Is magnetic fusion heading for ignition or meltdown?

Article Abstract:

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) programme to build a new power generator using nuclear fusion technology has progressed less quickly than intended. ITER partners, Europe, US, Japan and Russia have all experienced financial and political pressures since project commencement in 1992. The proposed construction date of July 1998 is now increasingly unlikely. Fusion experts are divided over the future success of the project.
