Hrr25-dependent phosphorylation state regulates organization of the pre-40S subunit

Article Abstract:

A maturation step of the yeast pre-40S subunit that is regulated by the protein kinase Hrr25 and involves ribosomal protein Rps3 is identified. In vivo depletion of Hrr25 has inhibited growth, leading to the accumulation of immature 40S that contain unstably bound Rps3, and hence the kinase activity of Hrr25 is found to regulate the maturation of 40S ribosomal subunits.

RNA lost in translation

Article Abstract:

The fidelity of mRNA translation into protein is vital for the accuracy of gene expression, and cells have evolved ways to detect any aberrant mRNAs that have structural defects. Cells alter their rates of mRNA transcription to change mRNA levels and to adjust mRNA levels, cells must be able to rapidly get rid of normal mRNAs that were previously synthesized.

Termination by torpedo

Article Abstract:

The study addresses the problem of copying the DNA by enzymes known as RNA polymerases and provides evidence in favor of a striking alternative mechanism that the transcribing RNA polymerase is 'torpedoed'. It concluded that mRNA is cut at the cut polyadenylation site and Rat1 is recruited to the free end.
