Looking towards the West

Article Abstract:

Japanese pharmaceutical companies are forming close ties with universities abroad with a view to using Western expertise to help develop new drugs. Japanese companies have funded links with such US research centers as the University of Washington in Seattle and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Research centers have also been established at Oxford University and University College London in the UK. Several companies have endowed chairs at prestigious Western universities.

Japan's foundations still building

Article Abstract:

The Japanese pharmaceutical industry is increasing its funding of university and private institution basic research. Most of the industry's funding is through charitable foundations that make grants to individuals and institutions. Grant money is not as closely tied to research as in the US. A trend to fund endowed chairs at Japanese universities developed following the relaxation of laws which had prohibited the practice.
