Identification of a vesicular glutamate transporter that defines a glutamatergic phenotype in neurons

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the uptake of glutamate by intracellular vesicles following the expression of a BNPI transporter. The role of glutamate as a major mammalian excitatory neurotransmitter is discussed.

Synaptotagmin I functions as a calcium regulator of release probability

Article Abstract:

Research is presented concerning the influence of Ca2+ in the stimulation of neurotransmitters to initiate the transmission of signals. A point mutation of synaptotagmin I in mice which decreases Ca2+ is discussed.

Munc 13-1 is essential for fusion competence of glutamatergic synaptic vesicles

Article Abstract:

Calcium-triggered exocytotic fusion of synaptic vesicles mediates neurotransmitter release at synapses between nerve cells. Munc13-1 has been identified as a brain-specific presynaptic phorbol ester receptor, essential for synaptic vesicle maturation. Glutamatergic hippocampal neurons from mice without Munc13-1 are found to form ultrasturcturally normal synapses with the synaptic-vesicle cycle arrested at maturation.
