In the shadow of the volcano

Article Abstract:

Wildlife has returned to Mt. St. Helens since the volcano's 1980 eruption. Many biologists assumed it would take decades for the area to recover, but, while not yet back to its pre-eruption state, insects, trout, river otters, elk and other plants and animals have returned. Seeds and bugs were the first to make an appearance, leading to smaller animals who fed on them and eventually fish and large mammals. Human attempts to promote growth in the area have been less successful than natural processes.

Structuring the Life-Care Contract to Minimize Financial Risk

Article Abstract:

With the need of a growing elderly population to remain as independent as possible, care centers are being developed. Keeping these residential facilities affordable and profitable is a concern of facility developers. Horowitz and Ryan discuss costs to the resident such as admission and monthly maintenance fees. They give a profile of the average resident and discuss population turnover. A pricing model is suggested using a present value formula. The methodology used for pricing is explained.

Vroom, vroom

Article Abstract:

The Museum of Modern Art is exhibiting car designs, as is the Royal College of Art in London, England. Both exhibitions analyse the topic in depth and there is a tribute to modernism and the affordable design that it represents. Critics might argue that many designs are not affordable for the bulk of the population in poorer countries. Barriers to entry mean that designers cannot easily start on their own in this industry, though there is a need for design innovation.
