Increased dimethyl sulphide concentrations in sea water from in situ iron enrichment

Article Abstract:

Changes in concentrations of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in response to in situ iron enrichment were noted in two ecosystem-scale experiments aimed at studying the biological and chemical impact of iron fertilization of surface ocean waters. In the first experiment, there was a limited overall biological response and no substantial changes in DMS concentrations, although concentrations of its algal precursor dimethylsulphoniopropionate increased twofold. In the second experiment, a much stronger biological response was elicited and an increase in DMS concentrations by a factor of 3.5 was observed.

Dissolved metals in surface sediment and a microbial mat at 100-mum resolution

Article Abstract:

The steep concentration gradients of chemical species in aquatic microenvironments can be measured by optrodes and electrodes, but their range is limited. A thin-film gel technique has been devised to measure Mn, Zn, As and Fe concentrations and fluxes at a 100 mu-m resolution. The techniques has a potential use in other microenvironments with other chemical species.

Research is presented concerning the role of inorganic sulphides in the binding of trace metals of zinc, copper, cadmium, mercury, silver and iron in fresh water systems in Connecticut and Maryland.
