Influence of an agonist of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (buserelin) on estrus synchronization and fertility in beef cows

Article Abstract:

Buserelin, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GNRH), inhibited estrus and ovulation for six days in beef cows when given six days before cloprostenol, a progesterone F2alpha agonist (PGF). Estrus commenced in 83% of the animals from day 6 to 10 post-treatment as compared to 50% in the control group. A large ovarian follicle on the day of GNRH treatment resulted in higher precision of estrus after PGF injection. Fertility rates were similar over the 10-day synchronization period for all animals. Thus, estrus synchronization using buserelin may be useful in livestock breeding.

Pregnancy rates in beef cattle after administering a GnRH agonist 11 to 14 days after insemination

Article Abstract:

The effect of a gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist, fertirelin acetate, on the successful insemination of cattle is determined through intramuscular injection of different doses of the GnRH agonist to inseminated virgin heifers and suckled beef cows. Administration of fertirelin acetate increased the incidence of pregnancy in both virgin heifers and suckled beef cows. GnRH agonists, which induce ovulation and delay luteolysis, enhance maternal recognition of gestation and increase the chances for implantation.

Endocrine responses and ovarian changes in inseminated dairy heifers after an injection of a GnRH agonist 11 to 13 days after estrus

Article Abstract:

Endocrine responses and ovarian changes were measured in Holstein dairy heifers after an injection of gonadotropin releasing hormone agonist. Blood was collected at different time intervals to measure luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E) and progesterone (P). There was an increase of LH and FSH from the pituitary with administration of fertirelin acetate. This increased the E and P six hours after injection creating a luteotrophic effect.
