Influence of natural food abundnance on black bear harvests in Minnesota

Article Abstract:

Agencies responsible for black bear management make their decisions using the limited data available on composition of harvest and hunting success. A new study examining the influence of food abundance on harvests is presented. The study interprets harvest composition and hunting success relating to black bears in Minnesota and reveals that hunting success and harvest sex ratio have little relationship to the estimated size of the bear population.

Discerning biases in a large scale mark-recapture population estimate for black bears

Article Abstract:

Mark-recapture estimates for American black bears in Minnesota over a 12-year period were derived to aid in management of this hunted population. Although results indicate that multiple recapture samples are useful for assessing bias, it is suggested that modifications be made to the methodology so as to increase accuracy and precision of the results.

Grizzly bear demographics in and around Banff national park and Kananaskis country, Alberta

Article Abstract:

The area in and around Banff National Park in southwestern Alberta, Canada is one of the most heavily used and developed areas where grizzly bears still exist. During the years 1994-2002, 37 female and 34 male bears in this area were radiomarked and monitored to estimate rates of survival, reproduction, and population growth.
