Influence of ocean heat transport on the climate of the Last Glacial Maximum

Article Abstract:

The Last Glacial Maximum tropical sea surface temperatures and related climate conditions are simulated by specifying the modern grid-by-grid transport of energy through the ocean. Results show that maintaining ocean heat transport at almost current values leads to enhanced cooling, especially in the tropics. Near-modern ocean heat transport may have been maintained in ocean basins during the Last Glacial Maximum to balance the formation and transport of Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water.

Irregular glacial interstadials recorded in a new Greenland ice core

Article Abstract:

Oxygen isotope levels from an ice core taken from the summit of Greenland's ice sheet confirmed previous evidence for the episodic occurrence of interstadials or periods of comparatively warm climate during the last glaciation. These interstadials, which were from 500 to 2,000 years in duration, developed sporadically probably because of the highly complex and variable circulation of the North Atlantic.
