Influence of temperature and precipitation on survival of wild turkey poults

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to identify the impact of heating degree-days (HDD) and deviation from normal precipitation on the 25-day survival of eastern wild turkey poults in southcentral New York during 1991-93. A negative association was found between the proportion of poults surviving to 25 days posthatch and the mean HDD/day during the first week posthatch. No significant association was found between observed survival rates of poults within broods and weather-based predictions of survival within broods.

Survival and reproduction of female wild turkeys in New York

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to determine the survival and reproductive success of eastern wild turkey in south-central New York between 1990-1993. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the highest survival rate occurs during the winter season. Subadult females had lower nesting rates, lower renesting rates and lower hen success rates than adult females. These results suggest that turkey populations subjected to severe winters would benefit from an enhancement of their nesting and brooding habitat.

Relation between weather and survival of wild turkey nests

Article Abstract:

The relations between weather variables and daily survival of wild turkey nests in southcentral New York were investigated using logistic regression. Daily precipitation was positively associated with heating degree-days, while daily nest survival was negatively associated with cumulative departure from normal seasonal rainfall. A strong positive correlation was seen between predicted and observed probabilities of 20-day nest survival.
