Interpreting carnivore scent-station surveys

Article Abstract:

The properties of the scent-station survey method used to estimate trends in carnivore abundance were assessed by analyzing data collected in Minnesota during 1986-1993. Findings showed that visits to stations had an intractable statistical distribution. Low statistical power and confounding were possible explanations for conflicting results of validation efforts. The survey method exhibited poor spatial and temporal resolution, susceptibility to confounding and low statistical power.

Sampling designs for carnivore scent-station surveys

Article Abstract:

A technique is presented for cluster sampling and analysis of scent stations for striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) populations. Cluster sampling was found to be useful only in the event that cost savings allowed sample size increases to offset concomitant rises in sampling variability.

Markov chain Monte Carlo estimation of species distributions: A case study of the swift fox in western Kansas

Article Abstract:

A systematic survey of swift fox in western Kansas was conducted to accurately map the distribution of the species by using Markov chain Monte Carlo image restoration. It is suggested that accurate maps of species distributions are very important for wildlife research and conservation.
