Handicap signalling: when fecundity and viability do not add up

Article Abstract:

Honest handicap signalling basically requires that a slightly higher-quality signaller must have higher fitness effect of advertising. It does not require that receivers maximize their fitness, only that they return benefits to signallers as a result of the size of the signal. Exaggerated signals resulting from an exaggeration of receiver preferences by sensory bias or indirect selection may confirm the handicap principle.
