Iron stimulation of Antarctic bacteria

Article Abstract:

Low-concentrations of iron enrichment stimulate the growth of heterotrophic bacteria in Antarctic waters. Iron-amended samples show approximately twofold increase in bacterial cell densities and a fourfold increase in the specific growth rate at temperatures typically found in Antarctic waters. The response of heterotrophic bacteria may have implications for trophodynamics and nutrient cycling in marine ecosystems where iron availability may attenuate biological activity.

A complex clathrate hydrate structure showing bimodal guest hydration

Article Abstract:

A new hydrate structure 1.67 choline hydroxide.tetra-n-propylammonium fluoride.30.33H(sub2)O, is reported. The choline guest shows both hydrophobic and hydrophilic modes of hydration. The structure comprises alternating stacks of structure H and II hydrates and could be found in seafloor deposits over natural-gas fields, where clathrate hydrates naturally form.

Complex gas hydrate from the Cascadia margin

Article Abstract:

The structure, gas content and composition and distribution of guest molecules were characterized in a complex natural hydrate sample recovered from Barkley canyon on the northern Cascadia margin. It is found that the stability field of the complex gas hydrate lies between those of structure II and structure H hydrates.
